Working as one to revitalize intergenerational language and cultural transmission by developing programming and resources immersed in Inuinnait values, beliefs, direction, and ways of knowing and being.
Our future generations are nurtured and mentored to think and respond in their language, to be secure in their identity, and to live a balanced life according to the wisdom of our ancestors.
Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq / Kitikmeot Heritage Society (PI/KHS) is an Inuit-led cultural organization based in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Established in 1996, PI/KHS is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing Inuinnait culture, language, and history. The organization focuses on the Inuinnait people, a distinct regional group of Inuit in the Central Canadian Arctic, where the Inuinnaqtun language has fewer than 500 speakers remaining. Through collaborative efforts with Elders, Knowledge Holders, teachers, and linguists, PI/KHS develops programs and resources that are deeply rooted in Inuinnait values and traditions.
PI/KHS operates the May Hakongak Community Library and Cultural Centre, which houses a museum, regional archives, and community library. The society also runs the Kuugalaaq Cultural Campus, providing intensive training and mentorship opportunities. Through deep collaboration with Elders and cultural experts, the organization ensures that Inuinnait heritage is not only preserved but actively practiced and passed on to future generations. Their work plays a vital role in strengthening cultural identity and linguistic resilience in the face of colonial disruption.
