The Tamil Community Centre (TCC) is a multi-purpose community hub being developed to serve the diverse and growing Tamil community in northeast Scarborough and southeast Markham. Created through extensive community consultation, the Centre will provide inclusive spaces, cultural programming, recreational facilities, educational opportunities, and access to essential community services.
The need for the Centre emerged after residents identified significant gaps in local services and public spaces. Communities in northeast Scarborough and southeast Markham often face challenges accessing social supports, recreation, and community resources. Scarborough is home to one of the highest concentrations of working poor residents in the Greater Toronto Area, while many newcomers and seniors experience additional barriers related to language, housing, and economic circumstances.
The Tamil Community Centre will help address these needs by bringing together recreation, culture, education, and community services under one roof. Planned amenities include a gymnasium, outdoor playing fields, library, gallery and archival spaces, auditorium, and flexible multi-purpose rooms designed to support community programs, networking, and civic engagement.
While rooted in the Tamil community, the Centre will serve as a welcoming resource for all residents, including Indigenous, Black, Caribbean, South Asian, and other racialized communities facing similar barriers.
